What We Belive

Our mission at First United Methodist Church is to share the heart of Christ from the heart of McKinney. We believe that God is love, and we are called to share that love through everything we do. We welcome, embrace, and affirm all people – and we mean all people!

If you have questions about the beliefs we hold and how we put them into practice in the world to share the heart of Christ, please contact us and a pastor will be in touch with you.

Human Sexuality and the Bible

Across the United States, some congregations are choosing to leave the United Methodist Church over the issue of inclusiveness. We, however, are clear in our beliefs. We love, welcome, and affirm all of our LGBTQ members and neighbors. To learn more about why we believe the Bible calls us to embrace all of God’s children, please visit our human sexuality page. It includes resources, study guides, and updates on changes within the United Methodist Church.

What the United Methodist Church Believes

We are a United Methodist Church. With other UMC congregations across the globe:

We believe in God who created us as beloved children, who sustains us, who loves us, and who redeems us.

We believe in Jesus Christ as God’s love made flesh in the world. We strive to be his disciples in the world and to follow his teachings of love, justice, and mercy.

We believe in the Holy Spirit who empowers us for ministry in the world. As God in our midst, the Spirit challenges, comforts, transforms, and renews us.

We believe that the Church is an extension of Christ’s life and ministry in the world today. Our church works to share the love of Christ with our community and our world.

We believe that the writers of the Bible were inspired by God. We hold that the Holy Spirit works today in our thoughtful study of the Scriptures, especially as we study them together, seeking to relate the old words to life’s present realities.

We affirm all persons as equally valuable in the sight of God. We therefore work toward societies in which each person’s value is recognized, maintained, and strengthened. We deplore acts of hate or violence against groups or persons based on race, color, national origin, ethnicity, age, gender, disability, status, economic condition, sexual orientation, or religious affiliation. We respect the inherent dignity of all persons.

We affirm the natural world as God’s handiwork and dedicate ourselves to its preservation, enhancement, and faithful use by humankind.

We believe that God is Love. Every person is created in the image of God, breathed into by the Spirit of God, and claimed by the love of God.

Everyone is welcome here.
